Too close to the sun

My friend is planning the wedding of one of her daughters. The wedding is one year away, but preparations are heating up. I have a role as the flower consultant. I have grown many as a home gardener. I know what I like. I have absolutely no idea what a bride would like and certainly none that the mother of a bride would like. I am scared out of my wits because my friend is a perfectionist. She flies much too close to the sun.

Daedalus fashioned a pair of wax wings for himself and his son. Before they took off from the island, Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, nor too close to the sea. Overcome by the sublime feeling that flying gave him, Icarus soared through the sky joyfully, but in the process he came too close to the sun, which melted his wings. Icarus kept flapping his wings but soon realized that he had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms. And so, Icarus fell into the sea in the area which bears his name, the Icarian Sea.

Daedalus didn't know when enough was enough. The belief that perfection can be achieved affects the lives of countless numbers of people. Many people are obsessed with achieving perfection to the point that it affects their physical and psychological well-being. These individuals are commonly referred to as "perfectionists." They seek the perfect mate, the perfect job, the perfect body, and they are often unhappy in their quest. Even the most mundane task can become an ordeal since the task must be performed to an exacting standard.

What is the perfect flower for a wedding? Can we find them in the fall? Irises are a popular choice of flowers due to the their strong colors, fragrance, and delicate appearance. However, Irises are not immediately associated with romance. Would my friend know this?

A long lasting flower, carnations are the flower of choice for many professional florists. Carnations are relatively inexpensive, survive longer than their more delicate counterparts and come in a choice of colors. Due to the wide variety of colors, carnations are a very versatile flower. White carnations are popular for weddings. Perfect, but would my friend think that they were too cheap?

Perfectionists are driven to have everything they do meet some internal standard of perfection. Often these people find it difficult to take on projects because they will spend so much time and energy carrying out the task that they become over whelmed and often either cannot complete the task or they take so long that it no longer matters.

I have mentioned that preparations are already heating up. Much energy will be expended in vain because of the inability to achieve perfection.  I am a seat of the pants type person. I'd look at lilies, carnations and asters. They will be available, reasonably priced and will not turn into pumpkins before midnight. As a photographer my tag line is: "I can only hope to some day master a technique that mirrors the truth". In the end the bride will be radiant and the guests will dance the night away. Perfect? Probably not. Fun? Hopefully yes..

Silver Surfer Comics Legend and Lore

The Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd) is a fictional character, a Marvel Comics superhero created by Jack Kirby. The character first appears in the comic book Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966), the first of a three-issue arc fans and historians call "The Galactus Trilogy".

Originally a young astronomer of the planet Zenn-La, in order to save his home-world from destruction by a fearsome cosmic entity known as Galactus, Norrin Radd made a bargain with the being, pledging himself to serve as his herald. Imbued in return with a tiny portion of Galactus' Power Cosmic, Radd acquired great powers and a silvery appearance. Galactus also created for Radd a surfboard-like craft — modeled after a childhood fantasy of his — on which he would travel at speeds beyond that of light. Known from then on as the Silver Surfer, Radd began to roam the cosmos searching for new planets for Galactus to consume. When his travels finally took him to Earth, the Surfer came face-to-face with the Fantastic Four, a team of powerful superheroes that helped him to rediscover his nobility of spirit. Betraying Galactus, the Surfer saved Earth but was punished in return with everlasting exile there.

Stan Lee enjoyed the character and decided to feature him in his own individual title in 1968. John Buscema was penciller for the first 17 issues of the series, with Kirby returning for the eighteenth and final issue. The first seven issues, which included anthological "Tales of the Watcher" backup stories, were 72-page (with advertising), 25-cent "giants", as opposed to typical 36-page, 12-cent comics of the time. Thematically, the stories dealt with the Surfer's exile on Earth and the inhumanity of man as observed by this noble yet fallen hero. The Silver Surfer comic book series became known as one of Lee's most thoughtful and introspective works. Englehart writes that Buscema and Lee were "pouring their souls into the series".

Time-less-image Maine Waldo

Visitors are awed by the area's unspoiled beauty. From striking coastal views to sweeping mountain vistas, dramatic natural settings abound. In addition great care has been taken to preserve and refurbish numerous historic landmarks, homes and buildings. Consequently, the Maine of yesteryear is still found here.
